As an old and long experienced house opener, I congratulate you, Colu. And when all the houseflies are swept up, it is indeed sweet to sit back and reflect on why you’re there. And next time add to your list: bring or leave a bottle of unmediocre wine!
I loved reading this. Thanks for the honest portrayal. Things are almost never as romantic as they seem. But wow ~ much to look forward to in Nova Scotia in the years to come, I am sure.
This moved me so much and I cherish few things as much as our week together in Noba Scotia at yours and Chad and Joshie’s beautiful home. I wish I was there with you to sweep up the fly carnage and toast your warmth to a house that was surely relieved and exhilarated you were back HOME. As you said, be gentle with yourself....and your home and those windy poplars bringing everyone back to life❤️❤️❤️I love you and home I can visit this summer for a short weekend❤️❤️❤️
Beautiful. There are so many romanticized pieces of owning second homes, and we rarely talk about the mold and mice, the realities, and tiny triumphs of a finally clean (again) fridge and a fresh start. It makes the meals and good memories of the forthcoming season all the sweeter when they come--and they will come. 🤍
I loved your essay and thought how lovely to have a home in Nova Scotia. I understand and sympathize with you over the loss of a loved pet I lost my last dog Max after 14 years and although it was over 5 years ago I haven’t been able to think of replacing him. Enjoy your home in beautiful Nova Scotia this summer it sounds fantastic!
I really appreciate this brief essay, Colu, because I definitely see myself having some similar situations in my future (no kids, want a dog, want a summer home) so I love to know what to anticipate.
